Downtown Music Gallery, William Parker, Audra Wolowiec and more View in browser

Dear Friends,

The music discovery methods I wrote about in the last newsletter is now a longer and more formal article in the New York Jazz Workshop Blog. Since I penned it, Spotify has introduced its "basic" tier without audio books, i.e., the "unbundled" subscription plan which should pay songwriters and composers a higher royalty rate, and the RIAA has filed landmark cases against the two "it" music AI platforms Suno and Udio. More on the latter – and the ELVIS Act – at the bottom of the email.

Tech side of music is getting a lot of attention but, as I wrote in the above blog, it's the human connection that means so much to me. Vision Festival was an absolute blast, and here's what's coming up:

Tuesday July 2 @ 9:30PM  Downtown Music Gallery

KYOKO KITAMURA 4 with KEN FILIANO (b) and two stunning musicians I met at Bennington College JULIUS BOXER-COOPER (fl) and PAIGE DRAISS (ds, perc). This will be an all-improvised set, preceded by Judy Dunaway at 6:30PM, Jon Madof and Jessica Lurie at 7:30PM, Amos A at 8:30PM.

Wednesday July 10 @ 12:30PM Saint Peter's Church
William Parker
and Huey's Pocket Watch FREE
(The website says William Parker Trio, but it's Huey!)

Saturday July 13  Ibeam Brooklyn
168 7th St. Brooklyn, NY $20 for the entire day
As part of the Brooklyn Free Spirit Festival taking place on July 12 & 13 (full schedule on the poster above and the Ibeam link), at 4PM, I will give a workshop on improvised music based on Anthony Braxton's Language Music. OPEN TO ALL. 20 copies of score excerpts will be prepared for the participants to use and take home. At some point, Julius Boxer-Cooper, on flute, and myself, on piano, plan to perform a short excerpt of Anthony Braxton's Composition No. 101 to demonstrate how Language Music is used in scoresThis workshop begins the second day of the festival, followed by a listening session of Karen Borca's music at 5PM, facilitated by Ben Young, and musical performances starting at 7:30PM.

Thursday July 18 & Saturday July 20 @ Newburgh, NY
As part of the Upstate Art Weekend, I will be performing on the ferry between Newburgh and Beacon for artist Audra Wolowieck's Waves. Limited seating, tickets available here. With Davi Cohen, Chris DiMeglio, Young Sun Han, Clae Rountree and myself. Costume design by Rujuta Rao.

Further ahead, in September, I will present a short solo set of my current work which incorporates voice, piano, breath, hand whistle and frame drum. It's been a few years of meandering and experimenting, but something is starting to take shape. There's more stuff happening before I head back to Vermont so please stay tuned. Full schedule available on my site

About the RIAA versus AI, I've listened to pundits compare this to other copyright cases like NYT v. OpenAI. But, to me, there was always something uniquely grotesque about the lack of protection for the human voice, produced by our vocal cords, inside our body and part of our identity. Enter Tennessee's ELVIS Act (Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security Act), set to take effect in just a few days on Monday July 1, which prohibits people from using AI to mimic a person’s voice for commercial use without their permission, among other things. Will this start a conversation for nationwide-implementation?

Best,
Kyoko
